The Trouble with Presents......Is Debt!

Hi doves

How are we all? Enjoying the festive season?

Mine has begun with a slow start, so there isn't much partying going on. But there has definitely been some present exchanging.

See presents are nice, you feel all warm and fuzzy inside when you open them. Smile at the thoughtfulness of the gift giver and thank them profusely. Then the dreaded realisation hits you that they probably might, certainly, will definitely want something just as nice or better in return. *scratched record* Yeah... Am I the only one who has felt like this before..no?

Product Hits and Misses I didn't Blog About

Hi Doves!

As the year is drawing to a close, I had a look over all the stuff I have used. I think i'm becoming a product junkie, eish...

This post is dedicated to the products I have used but did not review, because they were over shadowed by other posts lol.

Extra hits of 2014

Rosewater and Glycerine

I added this rosewater and glycerine mix to my regular sta-sof-fro braid spray. It provided lasting moisture well after I had sprayed it. My hair was soft and happy, I just wanted to cry. Definitely an add-on to my braid spray.

Braids Wash Day Ft Black Soap Shampoo

Hi hi

Hope we are all good.

Been a while since I posted a wash day, so im sharing my latest cleansing session.
I rolled up my sleeves for a full DIY session, majorly out of need.

My current sulfate free shampoo which I was testing out is really not working out for me. I've written it off as a miss, because although sulfate free and cheap, it causes tangles and leaves my hair feeling hard and stripped. So goodbye Clicks Kids' Detangling Shampoo, I'll  be leaving you in 2014.

In my bid to get a sulfate free cleanse, I looked at my trusty Dudu Osun black soap and thought now is as good a time as ever to test it out as a shampoo. So I grated a bit off, then dissolved it in hot water. I just eye-balled all the measurements. It lathers up so much and the water was really slippery, I smiled! I then poured it into my spray bottle and left it to dissolve fully and cool whilst I enjoyed myself in town.

When I got home it was wash time. Braids wash days are the easiest and fastest for me because I don't have to do all that detangling and sectioning, and twisting that comes with loose hair.

So I wet my braids thoroughly, then sprayed my scalp. I worked up a lovely lather. My roots did not feel stripped at all after two lathers. I was pleasantly surprised as some say that the black soap leaves their hair dry. #winning

I Committed a Crime Against Hairmanity....

Hi Doves

I am here to report myself for a crime in the hair world. I'm a first-time offender for this particular offence..not particularly proud of it.

Erm...
 welllllll
     I uh...
I Kinda, sort of removed my twists and installed braids the next day *hides*

Why is this wrong?
Long term protective styling is meant to protect the hair from the elements as well as aid in retaining length. However the hair goes under some strain during the braiding process. And although you wash and deep condition in a protective style, you still need to give it at least one to two weeks of deep conditioning, moisturising, tlc, pampering, loving and to assess your hair for any damage or areas that you need to pay special attention to. After this period, you can rebraid, put a weave, do cornrows etc. Therefore your hair needs a break between styles.

Product Review: Tropical Hair Butter

Hi all!

Today im going to be sharing my thoughts on this Tropical Hair Butter I purchased from Afrorage some time in July.

Afrorage is a small online shop which promotes natural hair care. They also have a blog and facebook page under the same name. I placed my order by sending them an inbox and after a few delays I finally got my butter and a free satin bonnet (it was a promotional special). The butter goes for N$ 120.00 and is only available from them because they manufacture it.

Product Review : African Pride Olive Miracle Anti Breakage Formula Maximum Strengthening Growth Oil

Hello everybody!

I want to share my thoughts on the Olive Miracle Anti Breakage Formula Maximum Strengthening Growth Oil manufactured by African Pride. Please product manufacturers can you PUH-LEASE, please, purizi shorten your product names? Okay thanks. I understand that 1. product names are in short supply because new ones are being made everyday and 2. you want to ensure the product name reflects its properties, but it really is a mouthful. I just call it olive miracle growth oil for short. Ok, on to the review.

I bought this at Pick 'n Pay for N$ 35..it is also available at clicks, dischem (grove mall) and some supermarkets and beauty shops.

Timing it! Finding time to keep up with your healthy hair journey

Hey everybody!

How are we doing? Good, bad, sad, happy, depressed, jolly, so-so? Im just alright.

You know, whenever I have my hair out and rock some lovely style, I always get 3 questions:

1. Wow, is this your hair?
2. Isn't it hard to manage natural hair? (If I had a dollar...#millionaire!)
3. What are you doing to it? It's really growing.

And then usually after I answer question 3...

"Wow, all that.. where do you find time to do it?" ,  "Eish I don't have that time!" or "You really have time to do you hair eh? I just can't manage"

Senegalese twists and multivite

Hey all..

Interesting header right?
Well I got some twists done to protect my hair. I feel between the wigging and flat twists and twists with my own hair i've been manipulating my hair too much. I have also been battling some split ends and want to minimise further splits. So i'll be in braids for the upcoming months. I prepped for these twists by washing with sunsilk shampoo and dc-ing with ors replenishing conditioner. This was my first salon visit since April, so I had to blow dry my hair to prepare it for the plaiting. These took about three hours to do. I had three ladies working on them, and then later two. I decided to go for this maroonish red colour for variety...so loving it!

Now in one of the hair chat groups i'm in, two of the ladies have been mixing their diy braid sprays with crushed multivite and got some good growth. So im testing it out to see if it works.

Molasses wash day *update*

 Hey all..

Just a brief post.

From my last post, people were wondering whether or not molasses is a humectant.

I hopped on to google and he let me on about the secrets of molasses. Turns out it is a humectant and shares similar properties to glycerine and honey. Some even say more so than honey! It is also a heavier humectant so it can elongate your curls after use, as compared to honey or gycerine. I personally noted this when I was applying it. My curls  and twist sections were quite stretched and the mix was heavier on my hair than usual.

So don't hesitate to add it to your deep conditioning mix the next time you want some extra moisturising  properties in your hair concoction. But I wouldn't advise keeping it as a leave in remedy because of its super thick and sticky nature.

Molasses Wash Day

Hey doves

This was a wash day I did before I got twists installed.
One of my hair group members let me on about how she uses molasses during some of her wash days..so I sped off to the kitchen to put it to work.

Molasses is the by-product from the sugar refining process and is known to be a very good dietary supplement. It is rich in sulfur, iron, B vitamins, selenium, manganese, zinc, and copper.

Why is My Hair Not Growing??! Solutions to Your Stagnant Length Problems Part 2

Hey Doves

Hope we are all good. I'm carrying on from where we left off last time  in part 1. We're covering reasons why your tresses may not be growing or retaining length as you would expect. We listed over manipulation, over trimming and not moisturising your hair properly in the first post.

4. You're still using too much heat.

Heat styling is every woman's best friend huh? Lil' tonging here and there, flat iron for the week, blow dry to keep your hair neat...We all love the styles and flawless look we get from heat styling, but heat is one of your hair's worst enemies.

Heat degrades the protein that hair is made from and consistent use damages the hair permanently over time. You can easily tell when natural hair has been heat damaged because the curls will not revert once you wash your tresses and remains straight. It can also be manifested in a MUCH looser curl pattern than you normally have. For instance your hair becomes wavy instead of curly..or you jump from type 4 hair to type 3 and your curls do not go back to their normal tightness.

Ch-ch-ch-changes!

Hi doves..

So this is the new look for now. New look, same old formula..(weeeellllllll I may start adding a few new things here and there, or changing the format of some posts but all for my and *your* benefit).

GlamLush Hair - Asimenye

Hey Doves..

Another day, another feature. Spotlight is on Asimenye today. I met her in one of the lecture halls on campus and the moment I saw the thick fro, I had to pounce on her for a feature. *hides*. Let's hear from her.

1. Tell us a little about yourself and your hair

I'm studying economics at Unam. I've been natural for most of my life but started really  taking interest in my hair some time  last year after my  mum made me join a group on facebook called Zedian Naturals. And my journey began.

Knot Today: Detangling Conditioners to Try

Hey mi Doves

Hope y'all are great.

I wanted to share some conditioners to try for co-washing, detangling and pre-shampooing. I stated in my last wash day post that these days, a cheapie conditioner has been helpful in detangling my hair. Im giving you my personal faves based on  my experience.

1. Tresemme Naturals Nourishing Moisture Conditioner
All hail the king of moisture. Although it is an instant conditioner, it works wonderfully as a deep conditioner too. It is strictly moisturising and detangles like a dream. My curls clump so beautifully with it. It is also great for co-washing because it is silicone free and just gives me a much needed moisture burst. I even see the dirt coming off when I rinse it.
N$ 78.00 is VERY expensive for an instant conditioner, but worth the money considering what I use it for. I mostly use it to dc, but I also put it to work as an occasional co-wash. Top of my list because it is my tried and true and never disappoints

Wash Day

Hey Doves

Been a minute since I last did a wash day post. Here is a rundown of my last two cleansing sessions

Sunday 28 September 2014

1. Pre-shampooed overnight with coconut oil
2 Washed with Clicks Kids Detangling Shampoo ( Sulfate Free)
3. Deep Conditioned with ORS Nourishing Conditioner with heat, for 1 hour.
It left my hair so soft, yet strong. I was in mini-twists so 1 packet was sufficient for the whole head.
4. Rinsed out and did an apple cider vinegar rinse.
5. Air dried, then applied sta sof fro braid spray and tropical hair butter

Very white looking products these past two weeks

Beauty Rx - What i'm Lovin'

Hey Doves

Im taking a break from the usual hair posts to share some beauty products for the
face and body that I super-duper-luuuurrrve

1. African  Black Soap
I love this miracle in a packet. Black soap has many benefits including being anti-ageing, clears up spots and marks, evens the skin tone, is a gentle exfoliant suitable for everyday use, helps with skin conditions like eczema and psoriasis and is a great cleanser for hair. I can attest to its benefits because it cleared up a patch of eczema on a face and has evened my skin tone. It dissolves very easily so all you need to do is wet you hand, rub the soap and watch the suds appear. A little goes a long way, so it can last up to three months if used exclusively for your face.
I stopped using face wash ever since I started with the black soap.
I got mine for N$ 60.00 at Exclusive, a shop in Townsquare, near the parking lot. Totally worth it.

Deep Conditioning 101: Maintaining your Moisture - Protein Balance (With a great analogy)

Hey Doves!

Been a minute, and we can just pick up where we left off. Cool?

So I straightened my hair and washed it. I then kept my hair in mini twists for two weeks. I'll post that update later. Also it's been forever since I did a wash day post. I'll do that asap. And..oh yes a hair feature..time to get someone up to show their glam and lush hair. Ok so now that we have our scheduled updates out of the way, it's time to continue on the deep conditioning post I did last time. If you are new, kindly click on the link to read all about it, then head back here. It will make more sense.

So when we left off I explained what deep conditioning is, why we should do it, the types of deep conditioners you should use and how often. I also explained that you can have a balanced deep conditioner, a protein one or a moisturising one.

It is important to alternate the types of deep conditioners you use in order to keep your hair balanced. Protein strengthens and rebuilds your hair whilst moisture provides elasticity, moisture and bounce. So the reason you alternate is to keep a good amount of strength in your hair whilst maintaining the hair's elasticity and moisture levels. This balance creates strong, healthy and less breakage prone hair.

Why is My Hair Not Growing??! Solutions to Your Stagnant Length Problems Part 1

Hey lovelies!

Today I want to tackle a common problem and question I get from my friends and other ladies alike. We all want the inches and mane you see other people (and bloggers heheh) walking around with. In fact i've seen a lot of women give up on the quest for growth and resile themselves to the conclusion that their hair won't grow, or black hair doesn't grow.
Just for lols

This could not be further from the truth. In fact hair is ALWAYS growing. The fact that relaxed ladies have new growth to retouch every so often, or that you start seeing growth under your weaves, braids and at the base of your cornrows means that your hair is growing.

On average, hair grows about half an inch, that is 1 cm a month. Some may get slightly more than this, others slightly less. So that means the average black, white, coloured, orange, purple or blue person will get 6 inches or 12 cm of new growth year! Isn't that something?

So what is the real issue? What is stopping you from that 6 inches more or less from surfacing in your life each year? It's length retention. You can't control how much hair you grow, but you can control how much of that length you will retain.  Keeping the length that you grow each month. Majority of it is lost to bad hair practices, rough handling and dry, unmoisturised hair. The tips im about to give apply to both natural and relaxed hair fyi :-)

The ends of it all

Your ends are the oldest part  of your hair. Yes, old and worn. So they need a lot of tender loving care. If you keep your ends healthy, strong and moisturised, they will be less susceptible to breakage.

Keeping your ends healthy means that you nourish them with oils, herbs and conditioners. It is important that you deep condition regularly to keep them tip top.
Moisturised ends are less susceptible to breakage. Dry.Hair.Breaks. That is why it is necessary that you moisturise properly whenever your hair is dry, and on a regular basis. This means also moisturising when you are in a weave, braids or cornrows. Check this post to learn how to do it right.

Remember how I said that they are the oldest part of the strand? To preserve them, you need to protect them from the elements and dryness. That is why we protective style.
Protective styling is when you do a hairstyle which keeps the ends hidden away. When they are not out , they cannot be manipulated and broken. Therefore a protective style preserves your ends and thus your length. Protective styles are braids, weaves, cornrows, buns, roll tuck & pins, and anything that covers and protects your ends.

Protective styles

I'm sure you've heard the popular myth that weaving or braiding makes hair grow. It is not the weave or braids that grow hair. But rather, because you have the style in for a month or two at a time, your ends are hidden and have no opportunity to break off. At the same time, you have new growth coming in. Then when you undo the style, you have the extra retained length. Protect your ends!

Manipulation
Manipulation is another length inhibitor. When you keep playing with your hair and switching styles every two days for variety, your poor strands just suffer and break. So be a pal to them and let them rest. If you are very antsy and can't keep a style for longer than a week, do one or two week styles. That way you only handle your hair once a week. Trust that once you cut down on the play time, you will have some hang time :-)

I cut down my manipulation by working from a braid out from wash day. When my hair is out, I wash it and then put it in about 8 braids or so to dry. The next day I carefully undo the braids and use the textured hair to style my hair for the rest of the week. I do not comb or anything. I just gather the hair into an updo, brush the perimeter for neatness and go.

Braid out updo..Can you tell I didn't use a comb?

Over trimming
Trimming is essential to remove dead and split ends. If you keep your splits, they will keep breaking off and leaving the strand to split again. Trimming DOES NOT make hair grow, but when you trim, all the weak, bad, breakage susceptible ends are disposed of. This leaves a uniform stronger 'bunch' of strands that are able to withstand breakage. Trimming also instantly creates a uniform look with of more voluminous strands. So when you see the splits or uneven ends it's time to go.

But when you trim as much hair as you are growing, you won't retain any length. If for instance you trim 1.5 inches every 3 months you are literally cutting away the amount of length you are growing. Leaving your growth to appear stagnant. Some stylists and people say you should trim every three months or with every relaxer. But the best is to trim when you see your ends starting to go bad or when you see split ends. That way you can only trim when necessary.

The other  way to retain as much length as possible is to do the search and destroy method. Basically you sit and go strand by strand (or 2 or 3 or 4) and assess each for splits and tapering thinning ends. It is time consuming,  but it pays off because you only trim what need to be cut instead of a uniform cut. The search and destroy method is also favoured by those who grow less than the average 1 cm a month a.k.a slow growers.

I stopped trimming every time I saw only one or two splits, or thought my hair was uneven,or on a whim. And just decided to trim when necessary, it really helped with my length retention.

The proof is in the pudding, and putting these tips to practise has helped me retained my length see:

The difference between October 2013 and June 2014 (after a trim) My hair looks thinner in the 2014 pic because  I had undone some thick twists just after washday. Day 1 hair after wash day does not have much volume for me.

I'm not done! Lol. Stay tuned for Part 2, where I discuss more things that are preventing you  ( and were preventing me) from retaining length.

Product Review : Sunsilk Co-creations Damage Reconstruction Shampoo

Hi lovely boys and girls..!

I have a product to review today.
As we all know, i'm on the hunt for the perfect clarifying shampoo. What is a clarifying shampoo? It is a shampoo that is meant to strip the hair of all build up and dirt. They are made with sulfates (which are also surfactants) and create that lovely foam and lather we all like. Clarifying shampoos tend to be drying to the hair because they strip the strand and scalp of all the dirt and natural oils. Now because of this, it is advisable to use them just once a month or when you have a lot of dirt and product build up. Some may use them twice a month or more. To counteract the drying effects, it's best to use them diluted with water, water and oil, or oil. If the shampoo contains the ingredients sodium lauryl sulfate, sodium laureth sulfate, ammonium lauryl sulfate or ammonium laureth sulfate, your shampoo is clarifying.

GlamLush Hair - Patja

Hey lovelies

Today i'm featuring the lovely Patja. I met her through a mutual friend, who actually introduced us because she also blogs about her hair! Find her at A Belle in Nam. She's got a lovely mane. I'll let her tell you more.

1. Tell us a little about yourself and your hair?

My name is Patja, I’m 24 years old. I've been natural since November 2012. I decided to go natural after I realized that I've been relaxed for 15 years and kinda figured my scalp and hair needed a break from all those chemicals. That's when I big chopped and started my natural hair journey. I would describe my hair as 4A type and low porosity. It’s very coily with a "S" like curl pattern.

Re-Blog! NaijaHusband : When You're Married To a Woman With Natural Hair

Hi Doves!
If you have not been following NaijaHusband blog, you need to start doing it now. It is a blog about a Nigerian newlywed couple who are not as typical as you would expect and blog anonymously as NaijaHusband and NaijaWife. They describe their newlywed adventures in a very comedic manner which always lands me in stiches. But their love for each other never fails to shine through and there is a lesson to be learnt in all the humour. The other day I was checking their blog and just had to share this post. I pity my future hubby in advance lol!
tallncurly_lastminute2
When you’re married to a woman with natural hair… or a woman who wears her own hair…or a woman with any hair at all to be honest, you have to grow accustomed to certain things.
Let me try to list a few.
1) Watching her Bathroom Turn into a Mad Scientist’s Laboratory
On any given day, NaijaWife, when not harassing me over my television watching, will disappear for hours. Once I don’t hear her asking me “what are you doing?” I know that means she has locked herself in the bathroom again.
I remember the first day I walked up to her bathroom door, curious to hear what was keeping her so long.  Smoke was coming out of the bottom of the door, and I think I heard some screams.
Moving closer, I could hear voices inside the bathroom (which I later realized were the faint sounds of a youtube video) giving her the following instructions:

Healthy Hair Meetup - Loving Your Hair

Hi Doves!

The hair meetup was at the University of Namibia main campus at the centre for external studies UCCB hall (old library upstairs). It was a lot of fun to meet people who have a keen interest in maintaining their hair and keeping it healthy.
The sound of India Arie's "I am not my hair" was playing, giving a fitting atmosphere for the discussions of the evening. As we began to find out seats,  the audience chatted with each other, trading tips, asking questions and complementing this or that person's hair do.

Hair Meet Up In Windhoek

 Calling all healthy hair enthusiasts!

See you there

Styling my Flexi Rod Set - Day 1

  Hi everyone

Once I had removed the rods, I applied some coconut oil to my hands so that I could add shine and tame the frizz as I worked. I  then separated each curl into 3 or so sections,  twirled  them around my fingers and let them fall. Then I picked and fluffed the roots for mor volume. Pinned the sides with bobby pins and I was done.

Wash Day - Straight Flexin'

Hi Doves!

I finally undid my hair over the weekend and I miiiiiiiiiiisssed it! So I decided to pamper it and try out something new, a flexi rod set!
So I rubbed some olive oil on my braids and let that sit for a while, I started undoing them. It took me about three hours because I was detangling as I went. Once I undid a braid I would coat it with a mix of olive oil, sunflower oil and coconut oil, detangle with my fingers and then move on to my next braid. When a section was complete I twisted it up and moved on.

Wash Day: Braids Edition

Hey hey. This is was how my wash day went down last week Sunday (3 August). Seeing as I had braids, I  decided not to fuss too much about it. I had washed it the previous week as well, but it was nothing to write home about. So here we go.

1. Pre-shampooed for 1 hour with olive oil
2. Shampooed with ORS Invigorating Shampoo

I have another lovely lady to feature. This is Winnie, she has been my friend since way back in primary school! She was relaxed, went natural and is now relaxed again. I just love how strong and thick her hair is...always! Anyway let me let her do most of the talking :-)

1. Tell us a little about yourself and your hair.
Hello:-)  My name is Winnie, I'm 22 years old and I'm a student at the University of Namibia. My hobbies include reading, drawing and spending time with family and friends. I have type 4c hair which is known to be the thickest and kinkiest hair type, lol.

Product Review : Sta-Sof-fro Braid Spray and African Pride Olive Miracle Braid Spray

Hello everybody!

I'm liking this two by two product review thing. I think it gives a nice side by side comparison of similar types of products. As I am in braids, I think it's only fitting to review braid sprays which i've used to moisturise my hair with. One of my secrets to maintaining my braids is an effective braid spray. Half the battle is won when you are ensured that your hair is nice and moisturised whilst tucked away in a protective style. Lets jump into it.

The ultimate test for a braid spray for me is-if after using it and NOT sealing it with oil, my hair remains moisturised\conditioned. If my hair stays moisturised, I have a winner. This is because I do not seal my hair after using a braid spray and it has worked well keeping it moisturised. Bear in mind that this works well for me.

Keeping My Satin Scarf on for Good!

Hi, hi...

How are we my doves?
Protecting my hair at night with a satin scarf or bonnet has become a nightly ritual. I can't sleep thinking of my hair brushing against the cotton pillow case and getting dry with it uncovered. Everybody on a healthy hair journey and their mama knows what a pain it is to have their satin scarf come off in the middle of the night, and wake up in the morning to find it anywhere but on their head! Kinda left feeling like this when you wake up:

The Hair Situ..

Hi doves! How are we today?

This is a hair journey and there are ups and downs.

Well today i'm sharing one of my downs. Some time in march I got some lovely soft dreads/ nubians. I had the hairdresser cornrow my hair, then sew them on. Kind of like crotchet braids. As hair gets longer, the ends need to be protected because they are the oldest and most fragile part of the strand. Usually most people just have the first one to two inches of hair braided then the rest blends in with the synthetic hair when they get soft dreads. It causes a lot of breakage, thats why I have mine done as if im being weaved.

Anyway take down day came along and I asked my sis to help me remove the hair. She used a razor blade to cut the thread and accidentally cut some of my hair *sniff sniff* so now I have a patch of hair that is about 4 to 5 inches short (when stretched) around the front of my hair. I was pretty upset, but ey, these things happen.

Glam, Lush and Healthy Hair from the Inside Out!

When on a hair journey a lot of emphasis is given to how you should handle your hair, what products to use, what techniques to apply. This is all well and good, but a healthy inside will always produce a healthy outside when it comes to hair, skin and body. In fact some common problems  you experience with hair can be easily remedied by shaking up your diet and lifestyle a bit.

Jumbo Braids

Hi my Doves :-)

I got tired of the wigging and decided on some braids for a few weeks. Im still salon phobic for now, so cousin did them for me. I didn't have to blow my hair out, I just detangled and stretched it with thread. I think i'll keep them in for three weeks because they are so big. Anyhoo we'll see how long they last.

Curls-R-Us

Hi Doves!

I was having some fun with my hair before I put it in the jumbo braids.  It's winter so I don't think my hair will be out that much till the mid or the end of August. Anyhoo, enjoy!
